Today is the 10th anniversary of the release of Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy on PlayStation 2. Naughty Dog, the game’s studio, took a look back at the game’s decade of service and wants to be sure it’s remembered for its technical merit, too.

“With each outing in the Jak and Daxter series, we set out to create a game that offered the player a new experience that built on the previous game,” writes Evan Wells, the co-president of Naughty Dog. He means in ways more than just the story of the previous game. “As you go from Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy to Jak 3, the story will connect across the titles as the gameplay and technical aspects of the games and the tools used to create them evolved.”

That involved bump-mapping in terrain rendering, cloth dynamics and rag-doll physics, things taken for granted in the current console generation. Wells points out the gameplay changes made to the series, too, taking Jak & Daxter from a platformer to action-adventure, shooter and driving.

“Looking back at the old code and comparing it to this newly minted code is pretty amazing. Our beloved Jak and Daxter franchise and its colorful cast of characters looks, and still plays, truly awesome,” Wells said.

Next year will see the release of The Jak and Daxter Collection, which will remaster the original games for high definition and stereoscopic 3D presentation. The collection is currently due for a February release.

Story from Kotaku (a much better game source then moi)

PITTSBURGH – If Ben Roethlisberger is going to help turn the Pittsburgh Steelers around, he’s going to have to do it on one foot.

Again.

The quarterback underwent an MRI on his left foot Monday following a 17-10 loss to Houston and team sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that Roethlisberger has a sprained foot. His status for Sunday’s game against surprising Tennessee (3-1) remains uncertain.

A scan performed Monday on Roethlisberger’s left foot was negative for a fracture, the sources said. An X-ray on Sunday had indicated a possible fracture but the test was inconclusive because of swelling in the foot.

Roethlisberger injured the foot in the fourth quarter but stayed on the field until the final seconds. He wore a protective boot while gingerly making his way out of the locker room.

If he plays — and Roethlisberger insists he will do everything in his power to be on the field — it won’t be the first time he’s given it a go with a bad wheel. He played the second half of the 2010 season with a broken bone in his right foot and managed to lead Pittsburgh to the AFC title.

“We saw I had to do that last year, I casted up my foot for the last half of the year,” he said. “If we have to do it, I’ll do it.”

The Titans are expecting Roethlisberger to play, boot or not boot.

“We all know what he’s accomplished and what a great player he’s been in this league and how he’s played with injuries,” said Tennessee coach Mike Munchak. “We’re assuming he’s going to be healthy and ready to go.”

Pittsburgh (2-2) certainly needs him under center. If Roethlisberger can’t start then 36-year-old Charlie Batch would get the nod against the Titans.

While Batch helped the Steelers to a 3-1 record at the beginning of last season — including a 19-11 win over Tennessee — while Roethlisberger served a suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, he did it behind an offensive line with some semblance of stability.

This year there are no such luxuries.

Injuries to tackles Willie Colon and Jonathan Scott and guard Doug Legursky have forced the Steelers to start four different offensive line combination in as many games.

None of them have clicked.

Roethlisberger has spent the first quarter of the season under siege, getting sacked 14 times and knocked around others. The three biggest hits he’s absorbed this season came on plays in which he got the ball out before getting punished. Twice he’s been drilled in the knees by defensive linemen after releasing the pass and on Sunday his foot got crunched during Pittsburgh’s penultimate possession.

That didn’t stop him from returning to the game for a last-gasp drive and ending up completing 16 of 30 for 206 yards and a pick.

Wide receiver Mike Wallace, shut down in the second half, didn’t notice a difference in Roethlisberger’s presence other than the noticeable limp with which he walked to the line of scrimmage.

“He was his usual self — still trying to make plays, still trying to get guys going,” Wallace said. “But we just didn’t get it done.”

On either side of the ball.

Only a pair of Houston touchdown returns called back — one a blocked field goal, the other an interception — kept the game close.

The Texans dominated long stretches, including a club-record 19-play, 95-yard drive to start the game. Arian Foster rushed for 155 yards, the most the Steelers have given up to a single player since Curtis Martin ran for 174 yards against them in 2003.

Linebacker James Harrison, who missed part of the game with an eye injury, wasn’t in the mood to take any solace in the fact the Steelers kept it close during a game in which they were thoroughly outplayed.

“We played like garbage, period,” Harrison said. “We stink right now.”

There’s time to turn it around, though the way the Steelers have lost decisively to a pair of AFC contenders is cause for alarm.

“We were just missing a whole bunch of tackles, and we’ve got to go back to the basics and figure out how to get people down,” defensive tackle Casey Hampton said. “It’s uncharacteristic of us.”

The running game showed signs of life, but isn’t 100 percent either.

Rashard Mendenhall went out with a hamstring injury and missed the fourth quarter. Isaac Redman and Mewelde Moore provided a boost, but Moore was walking around the team’s practice facility on Monday in a boot of his own.

The backs could be more important than ever if Roethlisberger can’t play. The two-time Super Bowl winner, however, hopes it doesn’t come to that.

“You know me, if I can be out there, I’m going to be out there,” he said. “That’s for next week too.”

Information from ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen and The Associated Press was used in this report.

HOUSTON – Andre Johnson turned upfield, fell awkwardly forward and clutched the back of his right leg.

In past seasons, an injury to their All-Pro receiver would’ve doomed the Houston Texans.

That was before they had Arian Foster.

Foster rushed for 155 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown after Johnson left with a hamstring injury, leading the Texans to a 17-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

“I go into every contest thinking that I’m the go-to guy,” Foster said. “When the flow of the game starts going, we need certain things, and you’ve got to be there for your team.”

Johnson was back on the sideline late to watch Houston (3-1) finish off Ben Roethlisberger and the injury-plagued Steelers (2-2). Houston coach Gary Kubiak said Johnson would undergo tests Sunday night, so his status remained uncertain for next week’s game against Oakland.

Texans owner Bob McNair told ESPN he was not “overly concerned” about the injury and would wait for test results before speculating on its impact.

“Now, if we have to go without him for a period,” Kubiak said, “we’re going to have to really ask some guys to step up to the plate.”

The Steelers may have to do the same without their franchise quarterback.

Roethlisberger was beat up all day, sacked five times behind an offensive line missing two regular starters. The Steelers also lost running back Rashard Mendenhall (right hamstring), linebacker James Harrison (right eye) and defensive end Aaron Smith (foot sprain) during the game.

Roethlisberger played until the end, but he was wearing a protective boot on his left foot afterward. He wouldn’t speculate on his availability for next week’s game against Tennessee.

“I don’t know. I’m still worrying about this game,” he said. “It’s still too fresh in my mind to worry about next week yet.”

Banged up or not, Harrison ripped the Steelers’ performance.

“I’m not happy with any of it,” Harrison said. “It’s a loss. I’m not trying to look for a silver lining in any of it. We played like garbage. Period. We stink right now.”

Foster, meanwhile, finally looked healthy after weeks of nursing a left hamstring strain. He broke a 42-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter after the Steelers rallied to tie it at 10-all. Foster finished with 30 carries.

“It was my first game back, really, fully, and I felt 100 percent,” Foster said. “It was a nice welcome back and those guys were really welcoming.”

Matt Schaub threw a touchdown pass to Owen Daniels in the first half. The Texans led 10-0 at the break, and an ill-timed penalty cost them another touchdown.

On the final snap before the half, Danieal Manning blocked Shaun Suisham’s field-goal attempt, and Johnathan Joseph scooped up the loose ball and ran 61 yards to the end zone. But Manning was flagged for an illegal block well behind Joseph, and the score was nullified.

The Texans had nine penalties for 64 yards.

“A lot of times, when those things happen to teams, they can’t overcome them,” Kubiak said. “That wasn’t the case today.”

Houston was on the move in the second quarter when Johnson pulled up without getting touched.

The five-time Pro Bowl receiver was down on the field for several minutes, hushing the home crowd and the Houston sideline. He limped off to applause and walked to the locker room on his own.

“The way he went down was deflating,” Kubiak said, “because it was like he just got shot. So that scares the heck out of you.”

Kubiak gathered his offense for a quick pep talk after Pittsburgh drew even at 10-all.

“He just said it didn’t look the same as it did in the first half,” Daniels said. “It didn’t matter how we felt it looked; it didn’t look the same to him. He just sent a message to us that it was going to take a little more.”

Without Johnson, Schaub looked for Daniels again and completed a 30-yard pass to his tight end early in the fourth. Foster took it from there, breaking outside and outrunning the Pittsburgh secondary on a 42-yard sprint to the end zone.

Antonio Smith and Mario Williams sacked Roethlisberger, and linebacker Connor Barwin swatted away his fourth-down pass with 2:38 left.

The Steelers had one last gasp after Houston had another touchdown wiped away by a penalty. Joseph intercepted Roethlisberger’s pass from the end zone and returned it for a score, but rookie J.J. Watt was flagged for roughing the passer.

The Texans got an interception that counted by Jason Allen to end the drive and clinch the win.

Foster set the tone on Houston’s opening possession, running over, around and through the Steelers’ defense, gaining 41 yards in all. He had a pair of 5-yard runs to the Pittsburgh 1, and with the Steelers keying on him, Daniels was open and Schaub found him for an easy touchdown.

The score finished a 19-play drive that consumed 10 minutes, 55 seconds, both franchise records.

Game notes

Texans RB Ben Tate left with a groin injury. … The Texans have outscored their opponents 76-13 in the first half this season. … Roethlisberger has been sacked 14 times this season. … The Steelers failed to generate a turnover and are minus-10 in turnover margin this season.

INDIANAPOLIS – During the final moments of a tight game Sunday night, Pittsburgh relied on its old standbys.

Troy Polamalu and Ben Roethlisberger.

Polamalu returned a fumble 16 yards to give Pittsburgh the lead, and Roethlisberger drove the Steelers 60 yards to set up Shaun Suisham for a 38-yard field goal with 4 seconds left that sent the Steelers to a 23-20 victory at Indianapolis.

Just like old times.

“Our defense, they’re fun to watch,” Roethlisberger said. “They make exciting plays when they need to, and they’re on my side.”

One strong final burst was enough after the Steelers looked out of sorts for the first 54 minutes.

Roethlisberger lost two fumbles and threw an interception during an 11-minute first-half stretch. Pittsburgh (2-1) managed just 67 yards rushing all night, and the vaunted Steelers defense produced just one sack.

Polamalu, Roethlisberger and James Harrison bailed them out. Again.

Harrison’s crunching sack of Curtis Painter with 5:13 left knocked the ball out and the opportunistic Polamalu scooped it up and jogged into the end zone to make it 20-13. After the Colts tied it with 2:09 left, Roethlisberger delivered another one of his patented late drives, setting up Suisham for the winning kick.

Roethlisberger was 25 of 37 for 364 yards with one touchdown. Mike Wallace caught five passes for 144 yards and an 81-yard score, the longest of his career.

And they won ugly.

“We don’t care how it looks,” coach Mike Tomlin said. “We just want to get out of stadiums with wins, particularly road stadiums and AFC ones.”

Sunday’s game wasn’t supposed to be so difficult for the defending AFC champs.

But Indianapolis (0-3), which has won 16 Sunday night games since 2000 — more than any other team, used the national stage to send a message. They’re not going away quickly or quietly, even with Peyton Manning out.

The Colts defense had three sacks, forced three turnovers, delivered a plethora of big hits and even scored Indy’s first first-half touchdown of the season.

It just wasn’t enough.

“We don’t care about second-place prizes or playing good for a half or three quarters,” said Dwight Freeney, who had two sacks and forced a fumble that was returned for a TD. “We didn’t play good enough to win.”

Indy’s effort was complicated by injuries.

Five Colts starters, including Manning, were inactive. Indianapolis then lost backup quarterback Kerry Collins to a possible concussion that could keep him out of next Monday’s game at Tampa Bay.

Collins’ exit early in the fourth quarter pinned the Colts’ hopes on Painter, who entered with a career quarterback rating of 9.8. But he nearly pulled it off.

Collins was 13 of 29 for 93 yards but just 3 of 9 in the second half. Painter was 5 of 11 for 60 yards with a 62.7 rating and led Indy to the most meaningful offensive touchdown of the season. Joseph Addai carried 17 times for 86 yards and a 6-yard TD run that tied it at 20 with 2:09 to go.

“We still are measured around here by wins,” coach Jim Caldwell said. “That’s what counts. But the guys played tough, played hard, and you certainly can see evidence that we’re getting a little bit better, but the key is, you’ve got to win.”

Initially, it looked like the Steelers would win easily.

They got a 48-yard field goal from Suisham on the opening possession and took advantage of a terrible mismatch — linebacker Pat Angerer on Wallace — for the 81-yard pass that made it 10-0.

Then Indy’s defense did its best Pittsburgh impersonation.

Robert Mathis stripped Roethlisberger and recovered the ball, which led to a field goal. Freeney followed that with a strip sack from the opposite side. Jamaal Anderson scooped up the ball, cut to the middle of the field and used a brilliant block from Kavell Conner to free himself for a 47-yard score.

On the next play from scrimmage, Roethlisberger’s deep pass for Emmanuel Sanders was picked off by rookie Joe Lefeged. Adam Vinatieri then hit a 25-yard field goal to make it 13-10 at the half.

Suddenly, the Steelers were in trouble.

“We just couldn’t get things going with the turnovers,” receiver Hines Ward said. “It looked like it was going to be a blowout, but we let that team back in.”

Suisham tied it with a 44-yard field goal with 12:10 to go, and the Steelers were in a good position when Harrison smacked Painter in the back and Polamalu scored.

But Painter answered with an 80-yard drive, getting the tying score on Addai’s run with 2:09 left.

“We walked out of here with a win. Did we play well? No, we know we didn’t play well,” Ward said. “Do we got to get better? Yes, and we will get better.”

Game notes

Manning made his first appearance at Lucas Oil Stadium since an Aug. 26 preseason game but spent the night in the coaches’ booth trying to help his team. … Wallace had his sixth straight 100-yard game. … Reggie Wayne became the second Colts receiver with 800 career catches with 10:22 left in the first half. … The 81-yard TD pass was the third longest of Roethlisberger’s career. … Steelers tackles Marcus Gilbert and Doug Legursky both left in the second half with shoulder injuries. … Colts cornerback Justin Tryon also left in the third quarter with a hamstring injury.

PITTSBURGH – Ben Roethlisberger was down on the Heinz Field turf, his right knee throbbing, and feared the worst.

Turns out, the searing pain was only temporary.

Just like his team’s slow start.

Roethlisberger overcame a questionable shot to the knees to throw for 298 yards and a touchdown as the Pittsburgh Steelers rebounded from a horrific opening week loss with a 24-0 rout over Seattle on Sunday.

“We made improvements, but there’s still a long way to go for us,” Roethlisberger said.

The road, however, is a little bit shorter after the Steelers (1-1) toyed with listless Seattle (0-2).

The Seahawks managed 164 yards and didn’t take a snap on Pittsburgh’s side of the field until the fourth quarter while getting shut out for the second straight time in the Steel City.

“We’d didn’t score a point, period, and that is just embarrassing,” said Seattle quarterback Tarvaris Jackson.

An emotion the Steelers could identify with after getting rocked by rival Baltimore 35-7 a week ago. The loss sparked criticism that the defending AFC champions looked old on defense and undisciplined on offense while absorbing the franchise’s worst opening-day loss in 14 years.

Though the veteran-laden club insisted it was too early to panic, it wasn’t too early for a reality check, one which coach Mike Tomlin was only too happy to provide even after pushing the Seahawks around for 60 minutes.

“I am still chewing on last week,” Tomlin said. “I am sure we all are. That’s just the nature of this thing. It’s not going to take one performance to take that stench off of us.”

Maybe, but the Steelers were eager to get back to business after what wide receiver Mike Wallace described as the longest six days of his career. He did his part, catching eight passes for 126 yards and a score to post his sixth consecutive 100-yard regular season game.

The touchdown — a perfectly thrown 2-yard fade by Roethlisberger — and his 53-yard bomb both came in the third quarter not long after the franchise quarterback was face down on the turf after getting decked by Seattle’s Raheem Brock.

The Steelers were driving late in the second quarter when Roethlisberger stepped up to complete a pass to Heath Miller. Brock dived at Roethlisberger’s legs just as he let go of the ball, drawing a flag for roughing the passer and a gasp from the crowd.

An NFL spokeseman told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen that the league plans to review the hit.

Roethlisberger, surrounded by his teammates, remained still while the trainers checked him out. He made it to his feet then gingerly walked to the sideline while backup Charlie Batch warmed up.

Three plays later Roethlisberger was back in the game, throwing an incompletion that forced the Steelers to settle for a Shaun Suisham field goal and a 17-0 halftime lead. Though Roethlisberger wasn’t 100 percent, there wasn’t much of an argument when he told Tomlin he was ready to go.

“It’s not anything mystical,” Tomlin said. “We lean on the expertise of our medical staff. They were comfortable with where he was. He was comfortable.”

Or at least comfortable enough to pick apart a Seattle defense that spent way too much time on the field. Pittsburgh controlled the ball for nearly 39 minutes, ran 66 plays and would have made it even more lopsided if not for a missed field goal and an early goal-line stand by the Seahawks.

“I felt like we could have scored a lot more points than we did, but we won the game and that’s what’s most important right now,” Roethlisberger said.

Particularly for a defense that looked a step slow against the Ravens, who piled up 170 yards rushing and pushed the Steelers around.

Seattle hoped to do the same thanks to the return of guard Robert Gallery, who missed the opener with an injury, but it never happened. The Seahawks had 35 yards on the ground, converted 2 of 12 third downs and let Jackson get sacked five times.

“This is a process we are in and it is hard lesson to learn to come out here and go at these guys and really not accomplish anything at all on offense and getting knocked around some,” said Seattle coach Pete Carroll.

Pittsburgh wasted little time attacking, quickly moving deep inside Seattle territory before encountering a case of deja vu.

The Steelers went for it on fourth-and-goal at the Seattle 1 when the Seahawks stuffed Rashard Mendenhall just before the goal line. The Steelers challenged the play, sending referee Bill Leavy under the hood for a second look.

Leavy called Pittsburgh’s 21-10 win over the Seahawks in the 2006 Super Bowl, a game marred by what Leavy has admitted were a couple of bad calls against Seattle, including a dubious touchdown awarded to Roethlisberger on a quarterback sneak in which it appeared the ball might not have made it to the end zone.

This time, there was no controversy. Mendenhall was stopped short of the end zone, but it was a brief reprieve for Seattle.

The Steelers just kept coming, marching 60 yards on nine plays the second time they had the ball with Mendenhall bulling in from a yard out to put Pittsburgh on the board.

Reserve running back Isaac Redman made it 14-0 with an impressive 20-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter and it was more than enough for Pittsburgh.

The defense labeled “done” by at least one analyst a week ago swarmed the Seahawks, who are still searching for an identity now that longtime quarterback Matt Hasselbeck has moved on to Tennessee.

Seattle played without wide receiver Sidney Rice, inactive for the second straight game with a shoulder injury. He might have helped, but likely not enough to keep Seattle from heading back west winless.

Jackson didn’t turn it over but failed to make plays downfield. He completed 20 of 29 passes for 159 yards, his longest completion went for just 17 yards. Three Steelers had receptions of 19 yards or longer.

“The biggest frustration is that we’re just better than what we’re putting on the field on Sunday,” said receiver Mike Williams. “We just have to keep working.”

Game notes

The Steelers have won nine straight home openers. … Mendenhall needs 12 yards to pass former quarterback Kordell Stewart for 12th on the team’s all-time rushing list. … Pittsburgh’s Antonio Brown had a career-best 41-yard punt return in the second quarter. The drive ended with Redman’s touchdown run. … Seattle fullback Eddie Williams, starting in place of injured Michael Robinson, had his first career reception, a 9-yard grab in the second quarter. … Carroll said he’s optimistic Rice can play next week against Arizona. … Seattle’s last score on the road against the Steelers came in 1999 when the Seahawks were still in the AFC West. … Pittsburgh punter Dan Sepulveda had a career-long 66-yard kick in the third quarter.
